New York City is phasing out the use of No. 4 heating oil in boilers across the city to improve air quality and reduce harmful emissions. Local Law 32 prohibits the use of No. 4 oil in municipal buildings starting in July 2025 and in all other buildings in July 2027. The Department of Buildings (DOB) will no longer issue and renew permits for boilers to burn No. 4 oil as of Sunday, June 30, 2024. Failure to comply with the mandate could result in penalties of up to $10,000 for property owners.
