LOCAL LAW 33: BUILDING ENERGY EFFICIENCY RATINGS
Local Law 33 requires owners of buildings over 25,000 square feet to obtain Building Energy Efficiency Rating labels on an annual basis to display near public-facing entrances. These labels include a 1-100 ENERGY STAR® score and a corresponding A-D letter grade. Ratings are obtained through the Department of Buildings.
Local Law 33 encourages building owners to make efficiency improvements that reduce energy use, lower operating costs, and enhance comfort for occupants. It provides greater transparency into a building’s energy performance and empowers New Yorkers to make informed decisions about the buildings in which they live, work, and play.

MEET COMPLIANCE DEADLINES
The NYC benchmarking law – Local Law 84 – requires owners of large buildings to annually measure their energy and water consumption in a process called benchmarking. The Building Energy Efficiency Rating scores and grades for these buildings are determined by the annual benchmarking data and are released each year on October 1st.

October 1: Building Energy Efficiency Rating labels made available by the NYC Department of Buildings

October 31: Deadline to display the Building Energy Efficiency Rating label near a public entrance
UNDERSTAND THE RATING SYSTEM
The Building Energy Efficiency Rating letter grade correlates with a building’s annual ENERGY STAR® score assigned by the US Environmental Protection Agency’s benchmarking tool.

A: Score is equal to or greater than 85

B: Score is equal to or greater than 70 but less than 85

C: Score is equal to or greater than 55 but less than 70

D: Score is less than 55

F: Building did not submit the required benchmarking information
